How To Measure Fitness Progress: STOP Looking At Scales!

Health

The Scale Isn't Everything

We've all been there, staring at the numbers on the scale, hoping for a miracle. But it's essential to remember that those numbers don't define your worth or your progress. Your journey is about so much more than what you see on that small, electronic screen.

Celebrate Everyday Triumphs

Now, let's focus on the real victories – the ones that make you feel alive and accomplished - the reasons you started exercising! Here are some thoughts to ponder:

1. Run for the Bus

Remember that feeling when you caught that bus without gasping for air? It's not just about catching the bus; it's about feeling your stamina improve and your energy levels soar. In the past, being this out of breadth from a short run might have put you down, now it's a point of pride!

2. Push Your Limits on the Pavement

Whether you're taking your first run in years or going a little further than last month, each step further is a win. Instead of fixating on the scale, focus on your progress and much fitter you feel now. Feeling fitter is one of the best markers for success. Nothing beats confidence in your own ability and it has nothing to do with the numbers of the scale.

3. Dive Back into Swimming

If you've ever hesitated to dive back into the swimming pool, you're not alone. Regaining the confidence to hit the pool is a significant milestone! Swimming isn't just about exercise; it's often a hurdle many of us struggle to get over later in life because it means getting our kit off in one way or another. This also makes it a great litmus test to see how far you've come and test how you're feeling about yourself.

Shifting the Focus

So with that said, it's time to shift your attention away from:

- Numbers on the Scale

Remember, they don't define your worth or progress. Your journey is about so much more than a numerical value. Your weight will go up and down. It's worth mentioning muscle weighs more than fat too. Even on a weight loss (or fat loss we should clarify) journey, you're likely to build muscle as you drop the lbs of fat. If you're only looking at the number on the scale you'd get the false impression you're not making much progress.

- Hip, Waist, Leg, and Arm Measurements

These numbers don't capture your strength or overall health. Instead of measuring inches, measure your progress by how much better you feel and how much stronger you've become.

- Strict Calorie Counting/Food Restriction

Healthy eating should be enjoyable, not restrictive. Focus on nourishing your body with foods that make you feel good. It's about creating a positive relationship with food, not depriving yourself.

Find Your Motivation

Instead of letting the numbers dictate your journey, find goals that genuinely motivate you. Celebrate every victory, no matter how small. The road to the healthiest version of yourself should be enjoyable and fulfilling.
