Hi, my name's Stephen from the Double Vision Conditioning Centre.

I wanted to answer a quick question that I've been getting a lot from a lot of women who are either approaching the menopause or are going through menopause and have been through the menopause, and that is why they store fat around the stomach and what they can do about it.


Now, fat gain around your stomach is particularly correlated with a hormone called insulin.

So what happens when you get close to the menopause is you become more insulin resistant. What this means is that you require more insulin to actually get the same job done that you used to get done, e.g. it requires more insulin for you to store your food, the nutrients that you take in.


What happens is you end up becoming insulin resistant, which means you're far more likely to store fat around your stomach. So a lot of women say that the food that very they eat now wouldn't have had the same effect on them, say, 10, 15 years ago.

And that's true. That's because the insulin resistance means that you're far more likely to store fat around your stomach.


So a few things you can do to avoid this is try to limit the amount of carbohydrate you have overall.

So try to limit particularly amount of process carbohydrates you have, such as pastas, white potatoes, rice and things like that, and try and engage in some resistance training which will actually increase your insulin resistance.

So just to recap the reason your storing fat around your stomach is due to the hormone insulin and becoming more insulin resistant and the way to try and combat this is to live a lower carbohydrate type of life and to engage in resistance training.
